Oh, the joy of airplane grub — who can get enough of the oh-so-delicious pretzels & peanuts (that you now frequently pay for), the rubbery pasta & two-bite chicken? I’ll tell you a secret — I can. Now, it’s not that I don’t appreciate the fact that food is provided on international flights, but there’s something about eating not-so-healthy food that’s chock-full of preservatives that gets to me. That being said, I’m a huge proponent of packing snacks for a long (or even short) trip and being a prepared jet setter!
A couple of notes — steer clear of “snacks” that require the use of cutlery: you’ll either a) get caught for trying to bring a potentially lethal butter knife on board or b) forget your cutlery and end up eating your food like a barbarian. Finger foods are definitely best. Also, make sure to pack LOTS of water. I find that my skin get super dry on long flights & H20 is the cure-all :)
Here are some of my most favorite things to munch on while up in the sky:
-
Fruit :: Apples, nectarines & grapes are my most favorite. You can wash them before you leave and they’re ready to go! Portable wonders. I wouldn’t slice the apples though… the dingy brown that they turn doesn’t look all that appetizing!
-
Veggies :: Baby carrots, sliced cucumbers, sugar snaps - they are all super easy to tote & they’re healthy! If you hate eating raw veggies, bring a little cup of ranch or ask the airline staff if they have any you can use. BTW, don’t bring cooked veggies! Cooked veggies tend to smell a little like pee & it’s super unpleasant in confined
spaces. Your fellow passengers will thank you! -
Trail Mix :: You can buy trail mix anywhere (Target has a fanastic selection!) and they have various types to fit anyones needs. Easy to munch on + you get the added benefit of some protein-packed nuts & seeds. The ones with M&Ms are my fave. Mmm…
-
Granola Bars & Protein Bars :: Okay, I have an obsession with Special K Bars, Zone Ba
rs & Luna Bars. They’re delicious plus they’re a super portable serving of protein, fiber & everything else you need to stay full on your flights. Definitely beats the two-bite brownie the airline will offer up! -
Crackers & Crisps: I happen to be a huge fan of soy crisps (don’t knock em til you try em, folks!) and they have a slew of fantastic flavors (the ranch is amaaaazing). Also, Kashi makes some TLC crackers that are pretty good, too. I don’t honestly tote crackers around for a couple of main reasons: they tend to get smashed in my bag since they have to hang out in there with every other item I own and I honestly don’t like plain crackers — crackers were meant to be eaten with cheese or hummus. Maybe bring some cheese cubes on the plane. Then your crackers can get some face time on the flight, too.
Don’t forget the H2O! Bring a 1 or 1.5L bottle — just make sure you sit next to the lavatory! If you can’t bring yourself to down a liter and a half of water, try purchasing those Crystal Light or Gatorate portable dry mix packs! Sprinkle some of the lemonade or berry mix right into your water & shake it up! Makes it that much more enticing <3.
Anyone else have flight snacks they just can’t live without? Please share!
Happy Snacking,
