A Birthday in LA: Part I

As I mentioned earlier last week, Friday marked my girlfriend’s 29th birthday and started off our jam-packed, fun-filled LA weekend. I haven’t actually driven to Southern California in years (maybe 6 or 7?). In recent years, LA hasn’t really been on the top of my agenda. Instead, I typically opt to head down to San Diego for mini vacays when I can nab a Southwest flight on the cheap. I can happily say that after this weekend, LA is officially on the top of my list of getaway spots!

The drive was much shorter than I remembered it being as a child. Perhaps it was because I had a friend to talk to and catch up with or perhaps it was because I better understood the concept of time, but in no time we made it to Le Montrose in West Hollywood {Yelp} after a quick pit stop in Santa Nella. (Side note: Pea Soup Andersen’s in Santa Nella never fails to bring back childhood memories… my parents always made PSA our mid-way point during the long drive to keep us from whining.) Upon arrival (and mention of my friend’s birthday), we were upgraded to the Executive Suite where the views were stellar and the rooms were serenely quiet; a little oasis of relaxation in the middle of WeHo.

Later, we met up with G., an LA transplant living the dream in Brentwood. We made our way to Culver City for dinner, where we nabbed outside seating at Kay ‘n Daves Cantina {Yelp} and sipped on delicious margaritas (personal note: thumbs up on the blended strawberry margarita, thumbs down on the jalapeño version) while noshing on Mezzican cuisine. While we had planned on heading to Venice for First Friday madness, we instead opted to take the party back to our hotel room for the remainder of the night. (I mean, what good is an awesome suite if you’re not gonna use it?)

While Friday was DaliaSparkle’s actual birthday, the celebration continued on through the weekend! Check back tomorrow as I recount our fun-filled Saturday at Real Food Daily, SkyBar (@ the Mondrian) and The Bazaar at the SLS! So much LA in so little time!

Love from California,
