Boat Shoe Boy & I had our own birthday celebration on the Monday following my birthday weekend. As I have a slight obsession with sushi, a sushi-making class had been on my to-do list for years. With loads of fresh fish, veggies and sushi-making necessities at the ready (a sushi-making kit, seaweed, sushi rice, wasabi, soy sauce, etc. etc.), we forewent the class and got to work on creating some veritable masterpieces.
Boat Shoes has a tendency to go overboard (no pun intended) when it comes to stuff like this and in true form, we ended up with an insane amount of fish: hamachi, maguro, salmon, crab legs, masago plus cuttlefish and these little gems:
Yes, they look foul, but if you think of it like squid jerky it’s a bit more palatable. While I was kind of weirded out at first, they’re actually quite delish. Worth a go if you’re shopping at an Asian market. [If you're in the Greater Sacramento Area, check out Oto's for sushi-grade fish.]
After spending a good hour prepping the sushi rice (who knew it was such a process?), we finally got to work and pumped out six-plus delicious rolls. It took a while to get a grip on the rice:fish/veggie ratio, but by the last couple of rolls we were on point! My personal preference: easy on the rice, heavy on the fish.
While the sushi-making extravaganza was an incredibly awesome birthday gift, Boat Shoes surprised me with a gift that keeps giving (through the summer at least): tickets to the Music Circus! I’m obsessed with live theatre so as you can imagine, I was beyond excited. We’ll be checking out a showing of The Producers (been really wanting to see that one!), Annie Get Your Gun and Miss Saigon! Needless to say, I’m excited for a jam-packed summer ahead!
Anyone else checking out performances this summer?
xoxo,

Saki ika is one of my favorite snack in Japan. I just love how it is prepared and the taste of course.
