What’s the Buzz About?

There are some hotels worth staying at, eateries worth popping into and sights worth seeing regardless of the price. Luckily, I happen to be a student on a budget so the majority of the places I stay, food I eat and sights I see are on the not-so-expensive end of the spectrum. If you’re looking for super high-end, I may have a review or two, but the majority of these reviews are for fellow bargain-hunters wanting to travel on a budget.

Also, due to the fact that I subscribe to 2349203 travel deal sites, I get to find out about some sweet deals that are worth sharing. Check this page out for recommendations on hotels, vacation packages, and reviews on everything we’ve experienced thus far! For constant updates on deals & steals, the home page is archived & categorized for your viewing pleasure. ♥

For full reviews, visit the home page– or follow the link to the {category} listed in brackets to the left of the hotel, eatery or sight! Also, as this list has continued to grow, I realize that finding a particular city would take some serious scrolling (and be potentially damaging to your index finger). I tried to implement a search function with no luck. Best bet: Ctrl + F. Always my friend.

Andorra

Andorra La Vella.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Hotel CIMS, Carrer de Pau Casals
We needed a place and we were on a budget so we chose this hotel, but if I were to go back to Andorra I would
not stay here. It was definitely the worst part of our trip — awful internet and a lackluster staff. Bright side? Great location.

Czech Republic

Kutna Hora.

{Arts & Culture} :: Kostnice, Zamecka 127, Kutna Hora – Sedlec, 284 03
An hour train ride from Prague (about $5) and $1.50 entry fee, Kostnice is otherwise known as the ‘bone church’; an ossuary made of the bones of 40,000 people. A bit creepy, yes, but definitely… unique. The original monastery was founded in 1142 but the modern incarnation is a few hundred years old. If you’re looking for a day trip, it’s a once in a lifetime. [full review]

{Arts & Culture} :: St. Barbara, Barborská 28401 Kutná Hora
Open 9A – 6P with $1.50 entry, this church is definitely worth seeing if you’re in Kutna Hora. The inside is quite nice and the architectural style is very recognizable.  [full review]

Prague.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Golden Tulip Prague Terminus, Hybernská 1674/42, Prague
In Prague 1, the historical part of the city, this hotel is serious bang for you buck. With three of us splitting it, it was about $15 – $20 per person per night which included a huge room, bathroom, very full breakfast and wi-fi! Centrally located (about 10 minutes walking from everything) with an amazing staff to top it off! Highly recommended! [full review]

{Arts & Culture} :: Astronomical Clock and Town Hall, Old Town Square, Old Town, Prague 1
A must see for a quick picture and a bit of creepy Eastern European history (you’ll likely hear the story while you’re there). The town hall was built in 1338 and while it’s undergone some renovation, it’s old and domineering. Not much to do, but definitely an awesome snapshot. [full review]

{Arts & Culture} :: Old Town Square, Old Town, Prague 1
The square sits perfectly between Town Hall and Tyn Church making it an awesome place to wander around. The pictures are gorgeous and unlike what you see in Western Europe. During our visit (not sure if this is year-round) the square was covered in market stalls serving up grog, beer, hot dogs, pretzels, crepes and loads of other heart attack-inducing fare. The beer is the same price as the water: about $2. Great place for students to explore on the cheap! [full review]

{Arts & Culture} :: St. Vitus’ Cathedral
Gorgeous and free? Dream come true. Gorgeous on the outside with amazing stained glass inside… some of the best I’ve seen, in fact. The castle next door costs money to enter, but this piece is 100% free. Check it out!

England

Brighton.

{Art & Culture} :: Brighton Pier, The Pier, Brighton
Such a taste of California – games, arcades, ice cream, beach chairs, roller coasters, a carousel, henna tattoos… the works! So much fun and so quintessentially beachy.

{Art & Culture} :: Brighton Street Art, Street of Brighton
Street art sprinkles the town and it’s definitely a sight; not gangster graffiti, but street art that exemplifies the talent of these artists. Keep an eye out for some Banksy action.

{Eats & Drinks}:: Harry Ramsden’s, 1-4 Marine Parade, Brighton BN2 1PA
Allegedly the best fish & chips in town! And for £5.20 for fish, chips & a drink, why not? The best part? Taking the greasy goodness outside and sitting on the deck with the beach stretched out in front of you. Delightful.

Canterbury.

{Art & Culture}:: The Canterbury Cathedral, 11 The Precincts, Canterbury, CT1 2EH
Cost: £6.50 for students, £7.50 for adults, Open Mon-Sat 9a – 530p & Sun 1230p – 230p
If you’re in Canterbury, this place is a must-see! I snapped shots of where Archbishop Thomas Beckett was beheaded and the place where King Henry IV is buried. Not too shabby. Plus the grounds are gorgeous! [

{Eats & Drinks}:: Gordon’s Wine Bar, 47 Villiers Street, London WC2N 6NE (near Charing Cross Tube)
The oldest wine bar in London (built into an underground cave of sorts) deserves a look if you’re in town. Very cool atmosphere and a cool mix of people. [

{Eats & Drinks} :: Rock & Sole Plaice, 47 Endell Street, WC2H 9AJ, Tube: Covent Garden
Smack dab in the middle of Covent Garden, an awesome fish & chip shop with great outdoor seating for the summer months. Share a large order and experience typical British fare on a budget. £13 – 15 for a large order (your choice of fish: cod, haddock, rock, sole, plaice).

{Eats & Drinks}:: Itsu, locations all over London (Drury & Great Queen is my home base)
Great place for some fro yo! The mini is ridiculously small, opt for the larger size and you’ll be happy. Better than any other fro yo I’ve found (better than
Snog, if you’re wondering).

{Eats & Drinks}:: The International, 116 St Martins Lane, London WC2N 4BF
Super cool, posh place near Trafalgar Square worth hitting up if you’re looking to get dressed up! The lounge downstairs is amazing and the berry cosmos are to die for if you’re okay with spending £7.50 on a drink. Not cheap, but definitely a fun night out! [

France

Carcassonne.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Baladins, 3 allee Gilles de Roberval
Much cheaper than the super central hotels, this bad boy ran us about $70 for a double for the night. Small but clean rooms with decent bathrooms and internet. There’s a great breakfast buffet for €5,50 on-site, too!

{Art & Culture} :: La Cite, Pl. du Chateau, Carcassonne
The charming walled town transports you back in time on its own. The amazing fairy tale castle? Well that’s just icing on the cake. €5 entry for students (€8 for adults) with amazing views of the city. Check out the map here.

Nice.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Residence Nice Fleurs, 17 avenue des Fleurs
One of the cheaper options in Nice, about 15 minutes walking from the train station and about 5- 10 from the beach. The studios are spacious with a kitchenette, good-sized bathroom, internet, balcony/terrace and loads of other amenities. The only downside was that there was no air conditioning — in 90 degree weather it makes for an awfully sweaty sleep! Bleh!

{Eats & Drinks} :: Le Bosphore, 15, rue St-Philippe 06000 Nice
Great little Turkish place on Rue St-Philippe. Not cheap but we did the appetizer sharing platter for about  €8.50 each. It was the perfect size and delicious! Mmm!

Paris.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Le Regent Montmartre, 37 bld Rochechouart 75009 Paris, Metro: Anvers
About a two minute walk from the Anvers Metro and five minutes from Sacre Couer, the hotel is well located to travel around the city. The area isn’t the prettiest, but the prices are definitely cheaper than the super touristy 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th arrondisements. The ‘hotel’ is actually more of a hostel; be prepared for small rooms, smaller bathrooms and bring your own bath towel (unless you want to ‘rent’ for €1.) Definitely not my first choice if I return to Paris!

{Art & Culture} :: Eiffel Tower, 7eme, Metro: Bir-Hakeim
Hours vary based on the time of year, but you’re safe to visit between 930A and 630P. Entrance fees are discounted for youth: 11.50 to take the elevator to the tippy-top. [full review
]

Despite the fact that this is one of the top tourist spots for visitors, we didn’t go to the top. We took pictures in front of it and checked out the area, but waiting in a 2+ hour line to ride to the top of a glamorous Space Needle? No thanks. If the line’s not long it might be worth it, but  there are probably better ways to spend your time (like eating crepes).

{Art & Culture} :: The Louvre, Metro: Palais-Royal–Musée du Louvre station
Entrance fees vary, but €9.50 is standard; check the site for free visits and to see if you qualify for free entrance year-round! This was the best €9.50 I spent in Paris! There’s something amazing about being in a museum as fantastic and renowned as the Louvre. The museum is massive though, so pick out the must sees (Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory were on my list!) and check those out first. You’ll probably run into loads of other amazingness on the way! [full review]

{Art & Culture} :: Notre Dame, Place du Parvis Notre-Dame (4th arrondissement)
Opening hours are from 8A to 645P and there is no entrance fee. The building is gorgeous and a stroll through the inside is a must. The lines tend to move fairly quickly but do be prepared to queue for a bit. The areas gorgeous though, so you won’t be disappointed. Plus, there are artists out front who’ll vie for your attention! [full review

{Art & Culture} :: Quartier Latin, 5th and 6th arrondisements
In my opinion, this is the cutest part of Paris! If I were to return, it’d definitely be the place I’d look to stay. Near La Sorbonne, the area is dotted with the cutest restaurants, cafes and boulangeries around. Delicious food, great views and a fun atmosphere! [full review
]

{Art & Culture} :: Sacre Couer, Montmartre, Metro: Anvers
Located in Montmartre, Sacre-Couer is at the top of a staircase that takes you to one of the highest points in Paris. The view from the front of the Basilica is gorgeous & the church itself is beautiful. The inside is actually kind of mediocre, but it’s worth a
look. [full review

{Eats & Drinks} :: Le Bar du Lycee, 67, rue de Dunkerque, Metro: Anvers
We stumbled upon this little one-man restaurant while looking for dinner crepes. The owner was so darling that we couldn’t help but stop in! The food was delish and the service was awesome! The menu is a bit limited, but the chef is sure to whip up something you’re looking for. [full review

Dachau.

{Art & Culture}:: Dachau Concentration Camp, Alte Römerstraße 75, D – 85221 Dachau
Free entrance, Audio Guide: €2 for students, €3 for adults, Open: Tue-Sun 9a – 5p
Not the happiest of places, but definitely a life lesson and a cultural experience in the outskirts of Munich. Take the tram from Munich for next to nothing and reach Dachau in under 30 minutes. [

Munich.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: The Tent, In den Kirschen 30, 80992 Munich
Definitely the place to stay if you’re looking for a cheap escape in Munich! It’s a great place to catch up with other hostelers from all over the world and it’s close to the tram to hit the city center. Plus during normal season (non-Oktoberfest time) it’s €10.50 for a bed! Also, good (cheap) food on site!

Italy

Amalfi Coast.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Nido degli Dei, Via Radicosa, 25 Agerola

An amazing little B&B hidden in Agerola with views of the coastal cities below, definitely the best bet on the coast. Where Amalfi will run you €100+ a night, this hotel was about €60 and was perfectly homey and comfortable. The family that runs it is amazing — so helpful & genuinely caring. I would definitely go back!

Firenze.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Casa Billi, Via Faenza 12, 50123 Firenze
Just down the street from S. Lorenzo, this hotel really couldn’t be better located for exploring Florence on foot. For
€49 a night, we probably shouldn’t have expected much, but we were still disappointed. A lift that didn’t work (read: carrying luggage up three flights), wi-fi that was in and out and the smell of ant spray in the air… probably wouldn’t stay there again!

{Art & Culture} :: Galleria dell’Accademia, Via Ricasoli 22, 50122 Firenze
The website says that it’s €6.50 for entry but I’m guessing that haven’t updated that since 2001. Entry fee is actually €14 per person. Hefty, yes, but in theory it’s worth it to see Michaelangelo’s David (which is the only thing of real interest in the Gallery). If you’re an art person, it is amazing — awe-inspiring actually. Just come prepared to pay more than you bargained for!

{Art & Culture} :: Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo), Piazza del Duomo, Florence
This place is incredible! Not only is it massive, but it’s intricate and gorgeous! The design for this bad boy was laid out in 1294. That’s even before my
dad’s time. Entry is free but cover your shoulders to get inside.

{Art & Culture} :: Ponte Vecchio, Florence
Ponte Vecchio (the ‘Old Bridge’) doesn’t have a place to see, per se, but it’s a great place to check out with jewelers lining the entire length of the bridge. It’s the only bridge that survived the war and for a while was the only way to get across the river. Apparently the sunset from the area is stunning – worth checking out!

Rome.

{A Place To Lay Your Head}:: Hotel D’Este, Via Carlo Alberto 4b, 00185, Rome, Italy
Big rooms, friendly staff and a great location about five minutes from Termini Stazione, a couple of minutes from the Metro, a minute to the bus stop and walking distance from nearly all major sites! [
full review]

{Art & Culture}:: Castel Sant’Angelo, Lungotevere Castello, 50, Rome, Italy
Hit this place up for some amazing views of the Vatican, the Tiber and Bernini’s art. It was originally built as Hadrian’s Mausoleum back in AD 170ish. It’s about €8.50 to get in {I opted out} if you want to see the museum.

{Art & Culture}:: The Colosseum, Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, Italy
Astounding from the outside with pretty great views from the inside. €12 for entry, €16 if you want the audio guide. It seems a bit steep, but the views on a nice day are pretty breathtaking! Take pictures with the gladiators out in front and go on a weekday, if possible to avoid crowds. [
full review]

{Art & Culture}:: Pantheon, Piazza della Rotunda
Pretty amazing to run into considering how long ago it was constructed [AD 170 per Hadrian]. It’s free to check out (something we can all appreciate!) and there are loads of fun eateries nearby! [
full review]

{Art & Culture} :: Spanish Steps, Piazza di Spagna, Roma, Italy 00187
I didn’t really know what to expect, but be prepared for an artsy area with some angsty teens gracing the steps. The Piazza is at the top, where you can grab some seriously cool art! Surrounding the bottom are high-end retailers (think: D&G, Dior, YSL, etc.) if you’re looking to drop some serious cash. [
full review]

{Art & Culture} :: Trevi Fountain, Piazza di Trevi, 00187 Rome, Italy
Probably one of my favorite parts of the city! The structure is 85 feet x 65 feet and absolutely astounding, plus there are loads of great shops nearby. Toss a coin into the fountain for a swift return to Roma. Definitely a must-see! [
full review]

{Art & Culture}:: Vatican City, Metro Line A drops you off 10 minutes from the Vatican
St. Peter’s Basilica is breathtaking and entry is free of charge. Get in early to avoid crowds! Note: The Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum are closed on Sunday, so schedule accordingly! [

Gozo.

{Art & Culture} :: Azur Window, Near Dwejra Point and Dwejra Bay
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in real life. Breathtaking and free, worth spending a few moments on the rocks to take in the amazingness of it all. [full review

{Art & Culture} :: Ggantija Temples, Xaghra XRA 2161 Gozo, Malta
Built between 3600 and 3000BC, the temples – a UNESCO site – are likely the oldest things that you will have seen in your life! They’re cool to see if you keep in mind the prehistoric and semi-religious nature of the temples. Entry will run about 15 euros.  [full review]

{Art & Culture} :: Ta’ Pinu,  Gharb GRB 104, Gozo, Malta
Although it doesn’t have the same grandeur as Mosta’s dome, or the antiquity of some of the other churches, Ta’ Pinu’s a nice place to visit while driving around Gozo. Free entry.

Malta.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: The Crown Hotel, St. Aristarcus Street, St. Paul’s Bay, SBP 02, Malta

{Art & Culture} :: The Blue Grotto
Tied with the Azur Window for beauty, the blue grotto is blue and breathtaking! If weather permits, you can take a mini cruise through through — undoubtedly worth it! Boats leave from Weid iz-Zurrieq.

{Art & Culture} :: Church of St. Mary’s, Rotunda Square, Mosta, Malta
Home to one of the world’s largest domes and a WWII-era bomb that never exploded (despite hitting the church), the church is the centerpiece of Mosta and worth a visit. Plus, it’s my grandpa’s hometown!

{Art & Culture} :: Paceville
West of St. Julian’s, Paceville (known as ‘PV’) is the place to go for nights out in Malta. Like a mini (very mini) Vegas, clubs and bars dot the streets of this town!

{Art & Culture} :: St. Paul Shipwreck Church, Triq San Pawl, Valletta, Island of Malta, Malta
No admission fee and home to St. Paul’s wrist bone (first class relic), this place is worth hitting up while wandering the streets of Valletta!

{Art & Culture} :: St. John’s Co-Cathedral, St. John Street Valletta, Island of Malta, Malta
About 6 euros for entry and the audio guide, this is a site worth checking out while in Valletta. It does cost money but there’s a lot of history and some gorgeous architecture. Don’t be fooled by the unassuming facade! Note: women, no heels allowed!

{Eats & Drinks} :: Cafe Jubilee, 125 St Lucia Street, Valletta
Open 8A to 1A, this Malta-based franchise is delish and affordable. Worth a stop in for a sandwich to refuel before exploring the streets of historic Valletta.

Scotland

Edinburgh.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Jury’s Inn, 43 Jeffrey Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1DH

Dare I say that the Castle wasn’t worth the £11? The views of the city are remarkable, but you can get those without paying the entry fee. Likely worth the cash if you’re travelling with someone who really enjoys the history, but the greatest pictures are from the outside (no entry fee required).

{Art & Culture} :: Lyceum Theatre, Grindlay Street, Edinburgh, EH3 9AX
Ticket prices vary based on seating, but students do get a discount of 50%. [

Perhaps I’m spoiled by London theatre, but my Peter Pan experience caused a bit of disappointment — don’t go in expected a Broadway performance or you’ll be sorely disheartened.

{Eats & Drinks}:: Princes St. Cafe, 20 Princes Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2AN
This place is on the bottom floor of the Royal British Hotel and is a great stop for a quick pick-me-up.  £1.75 for a coffee of your choice (I’m an Americano person) & a morning treat! Can you really beat that?

{Eats & Drinks} :: St. Giles Cafe, 8-10 St. Giles Street, Edinburgh EH12 9
Right off the Royal Mile, across from St. Giles Cathedral, this little gem is a great stop for some soul-warming soup or an infusion of caffeine. Another bonus: Super reasonably priced. No cards accepted for bills under £5.

Spain

Marbella.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Aparthotel Puerto Azul, C/ Camilo José Cela, 29602 Marbella, Spain
Well-priced and a great beachfront location, this hotel is an awesome bet if you’re a traveler on a budget wanting something comfortable for a proper getaway. Roomy bathrooms and a little kitchenette make it a home away from home!

{Eats & Drinks} :: La Venencia, Avenida Miguel Cano, 15, 29602 Marbella, Spain
Great little restaurant out that’s not quite so inundated with tourists. Inexpensive and delicious sangria (€8!) plus a good selection of tapas!

The Netherlands

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Orange Tulip Hotel, Damrak 32 1012 LK, Amsterdam
This ‘hotel’ is really more of a hostel. The rooms are small and a bit cramped, but if you’re on a budget, the location is great and the rooms can suffice. The bathrooms are surprisingly roomy considering the tightness of the bedrooms. The hostel is rather hidden so keep eyes peeled as you leave the train station (it’s about a 5 minute walk). Despite the cramped quarters, be prepared to shell out some cash. We spent about  £80 a night for a triple room. [full review]

{Art & Culture} :: Body Cult, Reguliersbreestraat 2A 1017 CN, Amsterdam
Since I don’t partake in typical Amsterdammer fare, I needed to do something else while I was there. Why not a piercing? The shop is darling and the piercers are professional. I’m not a fan of their aftercare products though. Didn’t experience their tattoo services, so no comment there. [full review
]

{Art & Culture} :: Canal Bus, €22 for a day pass valid on 4 cruise lines
This is like a hop on/hop off bus, except it’s a boat! What better way to see Amsterdam? The ticket is valid on four different lines that effectively get you all around town. If you’re going to spend money on transport this works as transport
plus a very Amsterdam-esque experience. [full review]

{Art & Culture} :: Magic Mushroom, Parterre 1012 VP, Amsterdam
I actually didn’t buy anything here, but this shop has
loads of cool stuff (including — yes — shrooms). This place goes far beyond mushrooms though (which is the reason I liked it), kitschy stuff that keeps you browsing for hours. It’s like the Spencer’s of Amsterdam! [full review
]

{Art & Culture} :: Xtra Cold Ice Bar, Amstel 194-196, Amsterdam, €14 entry
I find the Ice Bar concept kind of interesting (there’s one in London) and the fact that 2 ‘free drinks’ are included in your €14 entry fee makes it a bit more enticing. The drinks aren’t big (or strong), mind you, but the experience is kind of cool (literally). If you have extra cash to spend, check it out (it’s 30 minutes total). If not, skip it! [full review]

{Eats & Drinks} :: Bushdocter Coffeeshop, Thorbeckeplein 28 1017 CS,  Amsterdam
I’m not entirely sure what category a coffeeshop would fall under, so ‘eats & drinks’ seems reasonable. Let me be clear that I don’t personally partake in coffeeshop fare, but my counterpart while I was in Amsterdam said that this was her favorit
e coffeeshop by far! Gotta give it a shout out on her behalf. [full review]

{Eats & Drinks} :: Le Pot au Feu, Damrak 9, 1012 LG Amsterdam
Sitting on Damrak about 3 minutes from the train station, we hit this place up for breakfast twice and enjoyed the food and the service both times! Inexpensive way to start your day with typical breakfast staples. While we didn’t go in for dinner, the evening menu did look enticing! [full review

{Eats & Drinks} : Mannekin Pis, 1012 LK Amsterdam
Another shout out on my sister’s behalf. She
literally hit up Mannekin Pis five times in three days. The fries are huge (and admittedly delicious) and are covered with your choice of topping! Amsterdammers seem to go for mayo with their fries (bleh) and my sister wasn’t afraid to jump on the bandwagon. I think her five orders speaks to the deliciousness… as do the super-long queues that are constantly present! [full review

Spain

Barcelona.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Hotel del Comte, Diputació 142-148, Barcelona
Located near Urgell metro a bit outside of the main area (in E’ixample), the hotel is still well-located and much cheaper than the Las Ramblas accommodations. We paid around (the equivalent of) $100 a night for a double room. No breakfast but internet’s included!

Marbella.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Aparthotel Puerto Azul, C/ Camilo Jose Cela 3, Marbella, Malaga 29600
A stone’s throw from the beach in a great part of town, the rooms are big enough with a kitchenette, spacious bathroom and a balcony overlooking the nearby ocean! Internet’s a surcharge, but the well-priced hotel is definitely worth it!

Turkey

Istanbul.

{A Place to Lay Your Head} :: Star Holiday Hotel, Ahmet Aydoğan, Divanyolu Cad. No: 10, Sultanahmet
Considering the price, I can’t complain, but just remember: you really do get what you pay for. Our area was great and the views were superb but our rooms were incredibly tiny and we had to share a bathroom with others in the hall. If you don’t mind small quarters, free wi-fi & complimentary breakfast make this a good place for budget travelers!

{Art & Culture} :: Blue Mosque, Sultanahmet, Istanbul, Turkey
Oh, the gorgeous Blue Mosque! Free entry, but you must enter through the back and take your shoes off. Make sure you’re appropriately covered (it is a place of worship) and women should wear scarves to cover their heads. The outside is breathtaking and inside is beautiful!

{Art & Culture} :: Egyptian Spice Market , Eminonu, beside Yeni Cami (New Mosque)
Smaller than the Grand Bazaar but a little less touristy. Loads of food: nuts, fresh fish, tea, dried fruits and, of course, Turkish delight! Even jewelery and crafts are making their way in. Who knew spices were so pretty?!

{Art & Culture} :: Grand Bazaar, entrance from Beyazit Square or Spice Market in Eminonu
One of the oldest and biggest covered markets in the world, this place is a must-see. It may be touristy, but it’s so much fun! Hone your haggling skills and get some amazing deals on ceramics, Turkish delight, scarves, arts & crafts and rugs! Pay in Turkish lira (vs. euros or dollars) to get a better deal!

{Art & Culture} :: Hagia Sofia, Sultanahmet, Istanbul, Turkey; 20 YTL for museum entry
Right across from the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sofia is now a museum and competes as one of the most outstanding pieces of architecture in Istanbul. We didn’t feel like paying to go inside but it’s pretty amazing, even from the outside.

{Art & Culture} :: The Whirling Dervishes, The Press Museum, Divanyolu Road, No:84, Çemberlitaş
At 35 YTL entrance (25 YTL for students), it’s not a must-see. It is, however, a highly cultural experience and an interesting way to spend an hour in Istanbul! Go in understanding the premise for the ritual and it’ll make the experience much more worthwhile!

United States

Capitola, California.

{Vacations and Leisure} :: Capitola Beach, Esplanade, Capitola, California
Great place for a getaway — a little overcast in the mornings, but sunny by 11A! It gets packed, so grab your spot on the sand early for prime sunbathing. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day out of it or hit up any of the eateries adjacent to the beach! [

{Art & Culture} :: Coast Galleries, Ocean Avenue at San Carlos, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
This was my favorite of a bazillion art galleries in Carmel — amazing glass work and bronze sculptures that blow your mind! It’s definitely worth a peek; the talent is incredible.

{Eats & Drinks}:: Casanova, 5th Street between Mission and San Carlos, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
Darling place, great atmosphere and delicious food! Just remember, you get what you pay for and deliciousness does not come cheap. <3. [

Super cute B&B with great service and a delicious breakfast. They also provide wine and hors d’oeuvres from 430P – 630P so you can grab a bite before heading over for the night. 5 miles from Carmel! [

Paia, Maui, Hawaii.

{Eats & Drinks} :: Cafe Des Amis, 42 Baldwin Ave, Paia, Hawaii
Love, love,
love this place! Best crepes ever with a good selection of Mediterranean and Indian food. The dessert crepes are ah-mazing! Plus, it’s a great place to go with just a few bucks. Near Kahalui.

Sacramento, California.

{Art & Culture}:: The Lion King & Other Musical Theatre Performances, 1301 L Street, Sacramento, CA
The Lion King is the most amazing show I have EVER seen & the Musical Theatre in Sacramento continues to put on fantastic performances — between Phantom & the Lion King I’m overwhelmed! $35-100 per ticket

{Eats & Drinks} :: Moxie, 2028 H Street, Sacramento
I’m pretty sure this place wins ‘Best Kept Secret’ every single year — not really sure how it could remain a secret! The food is delicious, the portions are incredible and the service is always awesome. Pretty dimly lit, the restaurant is perfect for date night but would be equally awesome for a cool family get-together.

{Eats & Drinks}:: Sofia’s on 11th, 815 11th Street, Sacramento, California.
Great for a romantic night out; very swanky! Delicious food, amazing drinks (try the chocolatini!) & superior service. All around one of the best places we’ve been in a long time! (The website doesn’t do the place justice!) [

With happy hour from 4-8P, Monday through Saturday, it can’t be beat for the cost: 1/2 price sushi & cocktails!

{Eats & Drinks}:: Tre Sacramento, Corner of Howe & Hurley, Sacramento, California.
Great for appetizers & drinks; but desserts are probably not worth the investment!

{Eats & Drinks} :: The Peace Cafe, 1665 Haight Street, San Francisco, California
I absolutely adore this place & make a point to hit it up for a quick bite every time I’m in SF. They have a great vegan/vegetarian selection and it’s definitely a unique area to peruse while in the city

{Eats & Drinks} :: The Stinking Rose, 325 Columbus Ave., San Francisco, California
Spectular atmosphere! A fantastic little joint in North Beach, definitely worth visiting for dinner or drinks & appetizers! Mmmmm…. Garlic lovers unite!

{A Place to Lay Your Head}:: The Fairmont, 950 Mason Street, SF, California
Although this place is luxurious, it was not worth the $300+ per night! The room was average-sized and you have to pay for internet & extras (despite exorbitant hotel fees). Gorgeous views of the city, but not worth the money. [

San Ramon, California.

{Eats & Drinks} :: Sachi Sushi, 390 Market Place, San Ramon, California
Likely the worst sushi that I’ve ever had. Although the prices are reasonable, the selection is minimal and the product is mediocre at best. [

Seattle, Washington.

{Art & Culture} :: Pike Place Market, Pike Street, Seattle, WA
This place is quintessentially Seattle! It’s fun, entertaining and there are a load of fun shops to keep everyone happy! If you’re in town for a bit, the Farmer’s Markets are a great place to load up on farm fresh veggies
. [full review]

{Art & Culture} :: Space Needle, 400 Broad Street, Seattle, WA 98109
Cost: $16 for adults, $9 for kids; Open: 9A – 11P; the view is pretty amazing from the top although slightly overpriced. On a nice, clear day you’ll have a spectacular view of Mt. Ranier!
